Our Role in the Project Bar 11, a long-standing favourite among Newcastle Airport passengers, has undergone a complete transformation as part of a 12-week renovation project. The upgraded venue now features a sleek, contemporary design with elegant wooden panelling and murals celebrating the North East’s iconic landmarks. With seating for up to 330 passengers, the bar provides a vibrant, welcoming space where travellers can relax before their journey. MJC played a key role in ensuring the structural integrity of the renovation while accommodating the design vision. Our engineering solutions supported several key elements of the space, including: Panoramic Runway Views – The bar’s towering floor-to-ceiling windows offer a breathtaking view of the airfield, requiring precise structural support to maintain both aesthetic appeal and durability. Flexible Seating Configurations – From intimate booths to spacious dining tables, the layout needed structural adaptability to optimise passenger flow and maximise comfort. High-Load Capacity Flooring & Fixtures – Given the bar’s high footfall, we designed solutions that ensure long-term durability while seamlessly integrating with the updated décor. MJ Consulting Engineers assisted Edmonts Ltd with the delivery of structural engineering services for the newly redeveloped British Airways First Wing check-in and lounge facilities at Heathrow Terminal 5. Following months of detailed planning and construction, the upgraded First Wing is now open, providing an enhanced and seamless check-in experience for British Airways First and Gold Club customers. Working within a live terminal environment, MJC supported the integration of new layouts and specialist fit-out elements within the existing structure. Beyond check-in, the First Wing provides exclusive access to a dedicated walkway leading passengers directly to the British Airways First Lounge and the flagship Concorde Room. The completed works deliver a refined, passenger-focused space that supports British Airways’ premium travel experience while maintaining the operational demands of one of the UK’s busiest airport terminals. Burger King at Bristol Airport reflects our capability to design for complex, high-traffic airport environments, delivering on both speed and quality. Our Role in the Project This project formed part of Bristol Airport’s enhanced food and beverage offering for passengers. It involved converting an existing retail unit into a fully operational fast-food restaurant with seating and bar facilities, all within a live airport environment. We provided structural design for the fit-out, supporting the fast-paced programme and coordinating with the project team to meet an accelerated opening date. Key considerations included: Structural Adaptation - Reconfiguring the existing unit to accommodate kitchen services, bar areas, and customer seating without compromising structural integrity. Service Integration - Allowing for installation of specialist catering equipment and ventilation systems while maintaining clear passenger circulation routes. Durability Under Load - Ensuring the structure could withstand constant use, with high daily passenger volumes passing through the space. Improving the Passenger Journey Airport concessions need to operate smoothly under pressure while maintaining an inviting customer experience. Our structural input ensured the restaurant was completed to programme, enabling passengers to enjoy more dining choice - whether grabbing a quick bite before departure or relaxing with a drink while waiting for arrivals.
MJ Consulting Engineers were appointed to deliver structural engineering services for the new Marks & Spencer Food store at Bristol Airport. Located within the recently developed Public Transport Interchange, the store forms part of a major investment in enhancing the airport’s connectivity and passenger experience. Working closely with SSP UK & Ireland, M&S, and the wider project team, our engineers supported the delivery of a sleek, modern retail space designed for high footfall and operational efficiency. We’re proud to have contributed to the structural engineering behind Pandora’s first London airport store, now open in Gatwick’s South Terminal! As part of the £7.5 million refurbishment of the South Terminal departure lounge, this new store - features Pandora’s full range of jewellery, including travel-inspired charms, the ‘Best of British’ collection, and onsite engraving for a personalised finishing touch. Our role in delivering the structural design has enabled Pandora to create an environment that is both elegant and functional, in line with high standards for safety, accessibility, and passenger flow.
MJ Consulting Engineers were appointed to provide structural engineering services for the delivery of the Soul & Grain coffee bar at Belfast International Airport. The outlet is the first new food and beverage concept to open within the airport’s £100 million redevelopment programme. Working closely with SSP Group, Belfast International Airport, and the wider design team, MJ Consulting Engineers supported the structural integration of the new concession within a live terminal environment. This included assessing existing structural constraints, coordinating structural interfaces with the base build, and developing solutions to accommodate the new fit-out while maintaining passenger circulation and operational requirements. The completed Soul & Grain unit delivers a contemporary coffee space suited to high passenger throughput, with structural solutions carefully coordinated to support the architectural layout, services integration, and day-to-day operational demands of a busy airport terminal.
